Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a common eye condition where the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, becomes damaged and caused by fluid building up in the front part of the eye, which increases Intra Ocular Pressure (IOP) inside the eye.
Causes of Glaucoma
Optic nerve damage often linked to high eye pressure
High eye pressure results from fluid buildup inside the eye
Eye pressure can rise if the eye produces too much fluid or drainage is impaired
Elevated pressure damages the optic nerve, leading to glaucoma
In Bangladesh,
The prevalence of glaucoma is 3.2%
Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness, accounting for 0.8% of all blindness cases. With a prevalence of glaucoma suspects at 10.1%, early detection becomes vital to combat this silent threat and prevent irreversible vision loss. Awareness and timely intervention can make a significant difference in preserving vision.
